The peptidyl transferase center (PTC) is a highly conserved functional region within the 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) of the large ribosomal subunit in prokaryotes. It acts as an aminoacyltransferase ribozyme, catalyzing peptide bond formation between adjacent amino acids during protein synthesis. The PTC is also responsible for peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis, which releases the newly synthesized polypeptide chain at the end of translation. Many antibiotics inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding directly to or near this center, blocking peptide bond formation or stalling ribosome movement on mRNAs.
