Like other processed pseudogenes, it is derived from the reverse transcription and integration of mRNA from its parental gene, peptidylprolyl isomerase A (PPIA / cyclophilin A), but it no longer produces a functional protein product due to accumulated mutations or truncations[1][2][5]. PPIAP17 thus does not have established biological functions, is not considered a molecular target or receptor, and is not associated with therapeutic targeting, interacting drugs, or known disease roles. While some pseudogenes can regulate parent gene expression through non-coding RNA mechanisms, no such regulatory function is established or reported for PPIAP17 specifically[5]. **Note:** Information on the functional gene peptidylprolyl isomerase A (PPIA), sometimes referred to as cyclophilin A, should not be conflated with its pseudogenes such as PPIAP17, which lack known protein-coding or direct regulatory function[5][1].
