Peptidylprolyl isomerase A pseudogene 68 (PPIAP68) is classified as a pseudogene that is homologous to the functional peptidylprolyl isomerase A (PPIA, also known as cyclophilin A), but does not encode a functional protein. Unlike the canonical PPIA gene, which encodes an enzyme with roles in protein folding, intracellular signaling, and disease processes, PPIAP68 is not reported to have any protein-coding function, biological activity, clinical significance, or known roles in drug targeting or disease. Pseudogenes like PPIAP68 are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they typically arise from gene duplications or retrotranspositions that lost protein-coding ability due to mutations or the absence of regulatory elements. No evidence exists showing that PPIAP68 encodes an active protein in humans or participates in known cellular or pathological processes. The functional, well-characterized parent gene in this family is PPIA (peptidylprolyl isomerase A, cyclophilin A), which is an enzyme involved in protein folding and is implicated in various diseases; however, PPIAP68 is not the same as PPIA and lacks these functions or roles. PPIAP68 is not a genuine therapeutic or biological target, and the target name appears to describe a non-coding pseudogene with no established biological function, disease role, or clinical relevance.
