Peptostreptococcus

Molecular classification
Bacteria, Gram-positive anaerobic cocci
01

Overview

Peptostreptococcus is a genus of anaerobic, Gram-positive, non-spore-forming cocci that are part of the normal human flora, residing in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary system (StatPearls, 2023). While generally commensal, these bacteria are significant opportunistic pathogens frequently isolated from polymicrobial infections, including brain, lung, and abdominal abscesses, as well as pelvic inflammatory disease and necrotizing soft tissue infections (NIH, 2022). They are slow-growing and require specialized anaerobic culture techniques for identification, though molecular methods like 16S rRNA sequencing are increasingly used (PubMed, PMC7150172). Therapeutic intervention typically involves broad-spectrum anaerobic coverage with agents such as penicillin, metronidazole, or clindamycin, which disrupt essential bacterial structures or metabolic pathways (Merck Manual, 2023). As a genus of organisms rather than a single protein or receptor, Peptostreptococcus represents a biological source of multiple potential molecular targets rather than being a target itself (PubMed, PMC7150172).

Mechanism of action

Antibiotics targeting Peptostreptococcus typically act by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis, or causing DNA strand breakage through the production of free radicals.
