Overview

PER3 pseudogene 1 (PER3P1, also called PER4) is a non-coding pseudogene of the PER family associated with the molecular circadian clock. Although its direct biological function remains unclear, recent research suggests PER3P1 may act as a regulator of PER gene family expression, potentially by serving as a decoy for microRNAs and forming a competing endogenous RNA network to modulate expression of other core clock genes. Experimental data indicate that PER3P1 is significantly downregulated in colorectal cancer tissues and upregulated in the blood of type 2 diabetics, mirroring PER3 expression and implying coordinated regulation. PER3P1 has shown promise as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in several major human cancers and metabolic disease, but further research is necessary to confirm its mechanistic role and therapeutic relevance[1][2].
