Perfluoropentane (PFP)

Target
PFP
Molecular classification
Other, Fluorocarbon, Fluoroalkane
01

Overview

Perfluoropentane is a very hydrophobic, chemically inert, nontoxic, and noncarcinogenic fluorinated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C5F12 and a boiling point near room temperature. It is not a biological macromolecule, enzyme, receptor, or traditional therapeutic target. Instead, it is used as a **radioopaque medium** and **ultrasound contrast agent** in medicine—most prominently as a component in microbubble contrast agents for ultrasound imaging and in occlusion therapies, where its propensity for phase transition under ultrasound (acoustic droplet vaporization) is exploited for controlling microbubble formation. It is not known to interact with typical drugs or play a biological signaling role, and should not be listed as a molecular therapeutic target. Alternate uses include propellants for inhalers and various diagnostic aids. Perfluoropentane is commonly included in drug and biomedical device formulations but is best described as a physical agent or excipient, not a molecular target. If entered as a "target" for drug interaction or biological pathway mapping, this is a category error.

Biological functions

Other (serves as a physical agent and ultrasound contrast agent; not a protein/receptor/enzyme/transporter)
03

Disease associations

Other (used in imaging, not as a molecular target in disease)
