Target intelligence / Profile preview
Perflutren, also known as octafluoropropane, is a synthetic perfluorocarbon gas primarily utilized as an ultrasound contrast agent [6]. It is typically administered intravenously in the form of microbubbles, where the gas is encapsulated within a lipid or protein shell to ensure stability in the bloodstream [4, 10]. Unlike therapeutic targets such as receptors or enzymes, perflutren functions as a physical diagnostic tool by creating an acoustic impedance mismatch that reflects ultrasound waves more effectively than blood or soft tissue [1, 3]. This property allows for significantly enhanced visualization of the heart chambers and endocardial borders during echocardiography, particularly in patients with suboptimal images [4, 5]. Perflutren is chemically inert and is eliminated from the body through respiration within minutes of administration [3, 6]. While generally well-tolerated, its use is associated with rare but serious cardiopulmonary risks and hypersensitivity reactions, necessitating careful patient monitoring during and after the procedure [2, 4].
Perflutren acts as an ultrasound contrast agent by forming gas-filled microbubbles that provide a high acoustic impedance mismatch with blood, thereby enhancing the reflection of ultrasound waves and improving image clarity of cardiac and vascular structures [1, 4].
