Overview

Periapical tissue encompasses the specialized anatomical structures surrounding the root apex of a tooth, including the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum [StatPearls, NBK541031]. This region serves a critical biological role by anchoring the tooth within the alveolar socket and housing the neurovascular supply that enters the dental pulp [PubMed, 30034340]. Pathologically, periapical tissue is the primary site for inflammatory conditions such as periapical periodontitis, which typically arises from bacterial ingress following pulpal necrosis [Journal of Endodontics, 2017]. Therapeutic strategies targeting this area do not focus on a single receptor but rather involve the use of antibiotics, analgesics, and endodontic materials to eliminate infection and stimulate regenerative processes in the surrounding bone and ligament [PubMed, 28288716]. Consequently, while it is a focus of dental pharmacology and surgery, it does not constitute a discrete molecular therapeutic target.
