Perilipin-1 is a protein primarily found coating lipid droplets in adipocytes. It plays a central role in regulating lipid storage and mobilization by protecting stored triglycerides from lipase-mediated breakdown under basal conditions and facilitating their release during energy demand. Phosphorylation is key—upon hormonal stimulation via catecholamines acting on β‐adrenergic receptors, PKA phosphorylates specific serine residues on perilipin‐1. This allows recruitment/activation of HSL at the droplet interface while permitting ATGL access as well—initiating efficient mobilization of stored fats when needed by the organism.
