Target intelligence / Profile preview
Periodontal/mesenchymal cells – growth factor induction refers to the therapeutic process of stimulating periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and resident mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to facilitate the regeneration of tissues lost to periodontal disease (Larsson et al., 2016). This process involves the use of exogenous growth factors or signaling molecules to trigger cellular activities such as chemotaxis, proliferation, and differentiation into osteoblasts, cementoblasts, and fibroblasts (Miron et al., 2016). By inducing these factors, clinicians aim to restore the complex architecture of the periodontium, including the alveolar bone, cementum, and functional periodontal ligament fibers (Takayama et al., 2019). Common agents used to achieve this induction include recombinant human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (rhPDGF-BB) and enamel matrix derivatives, which mimic the biological environment of tooth development (Lin et al., 2015). While this approach is highly effective for localized bone and tissue repair, its success depends on the presence of viable progenitor cells and the controlled release of the inducing agents (Chen et al., 2010). Safety considerations primarily involve preventing excessive or ectopic tissue formation and managing local inflammatory reactions at the site of application (Kao et al., 2009).
