Periodontal tissue

Periodontal tissue (also known as the periodontium) is the collective term for the specialized tissues that surround and support the teeth in the jaws, including the gingiva (gums), periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone proper[1][2]. These tissues anchor the teeth, absorb masticatory force, continuously remodel to adapt to changing mechanical needs, and play a critical role in host defense against oral microflora. Damage or inflammation of the periodontal tissue (as in periodontitis or gum disease) can lead to tooth mobility, bone loss, and systemic health complications[3][7][9]. As a complex tissue group rather than a discrete molecular target, "periodontal tissue" is not the focus of direct molecular drug targeting, but rather the object of therapies (such as anti-infectives, anti-inflammatories, and regenerative treatments) aimed at modulating its structure and function.
