Periodontopathogenic oral bacteria are a specialized group of microorganisms, primarily anaerobic Gram-negative species, that reside in the subgingival biofilm and drive the progression of periodontal diseases. The most clinically significant group is the "Red Complex," which includes Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola, all of which are strongly correlated with severe tissue destruction (Socransky et al., 1998, Journal of Clinical Periodontology). These bacteria utilize virulence factors like gingipains and lipopolysaccharides to degrade the extracellular matrix and subvert the host immune response, leading to chronic inflammation (Hajishengallis, 2015, Nature Reviews Immunology). Treatment strategies focus on reducing the bacterial load through mechanical debridement and the use of antibiotics such as metronidazole or tetracyclines, which target essential bacterial processes like DNA replication and protein synthesis (Slots, 2017, Periodontology 2000). Furthermore, these pathogens are implicated in systemic health issues, as their presence in the bloodstream can exacerbate conditions like atherosclerosis and diabetes (Pihlstrom et al., 2005, The Lancet).
