Peripheral adrenergic neurons are nerve fibers that release the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline) at synapses between nerves and their target organs, such as muscles, glands, or other nerves. These neurons are a key component of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for controlling involuntary bodily functions. They integrate signals from the CNS and peripheral sense organs, transmit impulses leading to norepinephrine release, and mediate physiological responses associated with "fight or flight." They act on adrenergic receptors (alpha and beta) to influence processes like heart rate, blood pressure, bronchodilation, and metabolic changes. Adrenergic drugs targeting these neurons/receptors are used therapeutically to treat conditions like hypertension, asthma, and cardiac arrhythmias. Dysregulation can contribute to diseases such as chronic pain syndromes or heart failure.
