Peripheral arteries are blood vessels that transport oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the heart to the organs and tissues located outside of the central thoracic area, primarily supplying the arms, legs, hands, and feet. Peripheral artery is not a single molecule/receptor but rather refers collectively to all major systemic arteries outside of coronary/cerebral circulation. In clinical research contexts related specifically to "target molecules," focus may shift toward molecular mediators involved in arterial health/disease such as endothelial cells expressing VEGF-A165 or smooth muscle cells targeted by regenerative therapies for PAD patients.
