Peripheral Carotid Chemoreceptor (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Sensory receptor, Chemoreceptor
01

Overview

The peripheral carotid chemoreceptor, or carotid body, is a specialized sensory organ at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. It detects changes in arterial blood gases (O₂, CO₂, pH) and plays a critical role in cardiorespiratory homeostasis by modulating ventilation and cardiovascular responses. It comprises Type I (glomus) cells, which sense chemical changes and release neurotransmitters to stimulate afferent nerve fibers, and Type II (sustentacular) cells, providing structural support. It is important for maintaining oxygen homeostasis, acclimatization to high altitude, and exercise-induced hyperventilation. Overactivity of the carotid body is implicated in diseases such as sleep apnea, heart failure, and hypertension.
