Insulin Sensitivity (Peripheral Tissues)

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Metabolic Process, Cellular Response
01

Overview

Insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues refers to the ability of cells—primarily skeletal muscle, adipose (fat) tissue, and liver—to respond to the hormone insulin by absorbing glucose from the bloodstream and carrying out metabolic processes such as glycogen synthesis, lipid storage, and suppression of gluconeogenesis. High insulin sensitivity means these tissues efficiently respond to normal levels of insulin; low sensitivity (insulin resistance) means a diminished response requiring higher insulin concentrations for the same effect. It is a key factor in glucose homeostasis and is impaired in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
