Overview

A peripheral nerve ending refers to the distal termination points of axons from neurons in the peripheral nervous system. These endings are specialized structures that can be sensory or motor in function. Sensory endings detect stimuli such as pain, temperature, pressure, and touch from the environment and transmit these signals back to the central nervous system. Motor endings transmit signals from motor neurons to muscles or glands. The term does not refer to a specific molecular target but rather encompasses all anatomical sites where nerves interface with tissues outside the brain and spinal cord. Various receptors—such as nociceptors for pain detection—and ion channels are present at these sites and are targeted by drugs like local anesthetics and analgesics[2][3][4]. Peripheral nerve endings play crucial roles in both voluntary movement control via somatic nerves and involuntary regulation via autonomic nerves. They are implicated in numerous neurological disorders when damaged or dysfunctional.
