A peripheral nerve fiber is the axonal or dendritic extension of a neuron within a nerve of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), bundled with other fibers and surrounded by connective tissue sheaths (endoneurium, perineurium, epineurium)[1][2][5]. Peripheral nerve fibers can be sensory (afferent), motor (efferent), or autonomic. They are categorized by structure (myelinated A fibers, thinly myelinated B fibers, unmyelinated C fibers) and function (conduction velocity, receptor/type served)[2][6]. Peripheral nerve fibers transmit electrical signals between the central nervous system and body tissues and are affected in conditions such as neuropathies, trauma, and pain syndromes[7][9].
