Peripheral nerve Schwann cells are a specialized type of glial cell found exclusively in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). They play essential roles in the development, maintenance, function, and regeneration of peripheral nerves. Schwann cells surround neurons and can either myelinate axons—forming insulating layers that speed up nerve impulse conduction—or remain non-myelinating, supporting smaller caliber axons within structures called Remak bundles.
