Peripheral receptors in nasal chemosensory neurons are a diverse group of molecular sensors located within the nasal epithelium. They detect a wide range of chemical stimuli, including irritants, harmful substances, and bacterial products. Key receptor types include bitter taste receptors (T2Rs) expressed in solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs) and TRP channels expressed in trigeminal nociceptors. Activation of these receptors triggers protective reflexes and local neurogenic inflammation to guard the respiratory tract.
