Overview

The peripheral retina is the portion of the retina outside of the macula and fovea, specialized for peripheral vision and containing the highest density of rod photoreceptors[3][7]. It provides sensitivity to dim lighting and is responsible for detecting motion and maintaining a wide field of vision. In contrast to the central retina (which is cone-dominated for high-acuity and color vision), the peripheral retina is rod-dominated, making it essential for night vision and side (peripheral) vision[1][7]. It is not a single molecular entity or well-defined protein/receptor, but rather a complex and heterogeneous tissue region composed of multiple retinal cell types and support cells[3][7]. Thus, "peripheral retina" should not be used as a molecular therapeutic target. Additional context: - While gene/protein expression profiles vary between the peripheral and central retina, each comprising distinct populations of rods, cones, glia, and other neuronal types[2][8], the "peripheral retina" itself is an anatomical, not molecular, definition. - Some diseases (such as retinal detachment and retinitis pigmentosa) preferentially affect or begin in the peripheral retina[5][7]. - There are no specific drugs that target "peripheral retina" as a molecule, although some therapies may aim to protect or restore function to this region in disease contexts.
