Peripheral retinal defocus is not the name of a molecule, receptor, enzyme, or protein. Instead, it refers to a pattern or phenomenon involving the retina where light is focused either in front of (myopic defocus) or behind (hyperopic defocus) the peripheral retina, as opposed to the central retina[4][5][2]. This concept is a key area of interest in the study and management of myopia, primarily as a *risk factor* or *therapeutic target phenomenon*—not as a molecular or canonical therapeutic target.\n\nPeripheral retinal defocus is a phenomenon whereby the image is focused forward or behind the peripheral (outer) retina. Peripheral hyperopic defocus, where the peripheral image falls behind the retina, has been associated with axial elongation and the progression of myopia. Conversely, inducing peripheral myopic defocus, where the image falls in front of the peripheral retina, is used as a therapeutic strategy to slow eye growth and reduce the progression of myopia in children.
