A Peripheral sensory nerve, also known as an afferent peripheral nerve fiber, refers collectively to those components of the peripheral nervous system responsible for transmitting signals from external stimuli—such as touch, temperature changes, and painful sensations—from various body regions back toward the central nervous system. These structures consist primarily of axons whose cell bodies reside in dorsal root ganglia near the spinal cord; their endings contain specialized receptor proteins that transduce physical stimuli into electrical signals. Peripheral sensory nerves include several types based on function and myelination status: - Aβ fibers: large-diameter myelinated fibers mediating light touch. - Aδ fibers: thinly myelinated fibers involved in sharp pain and cold sensation. - C fibers: unmyelinated small-diameter fibers responsible for dull aching pain and warm/cold sensations.[4][8] These structures play critical roles in maintaining homeostasis by alerting organisms about environmental changes through signal transduction pathways involving various ion channels such as TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1) and voltage-gated sodium/potassium/calcium channels.[6][8] Therapeutic interventions often target specific molecular entities within these neurons rather than entire bundles due their complex composition; however disruption at any point along their course can result clinically significant deficits including numbness tingling burning sensations chronic neuropathic pains among others.[3][7]
