Overview

Peripheral sensory nerve endings are specialized structures located at the distal terminations of sensory neurons within the peripheral nervous system (PNS). These endings serve as the primary interface between external or internal stimuli and the nervous system, transducing various forms of physical or chemical energy into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the central nervous system (CNS). They provide critical information about touch, pressure, vibration, temperature and pain enabling perception of external environments as well as proprioception and helps mediate reflexes. Damage can result in loss or alteration of sensation, pain, numbness or impaired reflexes.
