Overview

Peripheral sensory nerve endings are specialized structures located at the termini of sensory neurons within the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Their primary function is to detect and transduce various external and internal stimuli—such as touch, pressure, temperature, pain, and proprioception—into electrical signals that are relayed to the central nervous system (CNS) for processing. These receptors convert physical or chemical stimuli into electrical impulses via a process called transduction. Damage to peripheral sensory nerve endings can result in loss of sensation (numbness), abnormal sensations (paresthesia), or neuropathic pain.
