Overview

Peripheral tissue refers broadly to all bodily tissues located outside of the central nervous system. This includes structures such as skin, subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle fibers and capillaries supplying them with oxygen and nutrients; connective elements like tendons and ligaments; blood vessels; lymphatic channels; glands; sensory receptors in skin/organs; as well as all components of the peripheral nervous system including nerves that transmit signals between organs/limbs and CNS. These diverse structures play critical roles in physiological processes ranging from movement/exercise metabolism to sensation/perception/hormonal regulation. The term “peripheral tissue” does not denote any single protein/gene/receptor/enzyme but rather serves as an anatomical catch-all for non-CNS body compartments. As such it cannot be considered a canonical therapeutic target for drug development but rather describes locations where more specific molecular targets may reside.
