Peritoneal Cavity Osmotic Gradient

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Osmotic Gradient
01

Overview

The "peritoneal cavity osmotic gradient" is a physiological phenomenon central to peritoneal dialysis (PD). It refers to the difference in osmotic pressure across the peritoneal membrane, typically created by instilling hypertonic dialysis solutions (most commonly glucose-based) into the peritoneal cavity. This gradient drives water movement from blood capillaries into the peritoneal space, enabling ultrafiltration and solute clearance in patients with kidney failure. Loss of this gradient effectiveness can lead to reduced ultrafiltration ('UF failure').

Mechanism of action

Hyperosmolar solutions create an osmotic gradient across the peritoneal membrane, driving water and solute movement from the blood into the peritoneal cavity for removal.
