Overview

A peritoneovenous shunt (PVS) is a medical device and surgical pathway used to drain excess ascitic fluid from the peritoneal cavity into the systemic venous circulation. It consists of a subcutaneous tube with a one-way valve that allows fluid to flow from the peritoneum to a large vein, such as the internal jugular or subclavian, when the peritoneal pressure exceeds the venous pressure. It is primarily used for refractory ascites, especially in patients with chronic liver disease or malignancy.
