Target intelligence / Profile preview
"Peroxides production" refers to the generation of organic or inorganic peroxides within biological systems, with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) being the most significant species in cellular biology. H₂O₂ is produced by several enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways, including the dismutation of superoxide anion by superoxide dismutase, oxidation reactions in peroxisomes, and as a byproduct of various mitochondrial electron transport chain activities. Hydrogen peroxide acts as both a signaling molecule at low concentrations and a cytotoxic agent at high concentrations, underlying its dual role in physiological regulation and pathological damage, notably in inflammation, aging, cancer, and degenerative diseases. Both the production and breakdown of H₂O₂ are tightly regulated by enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and peroxiredoxins. Therapeutic modulation of peroxide levels—either by antioxidant supplementation or by targeting specific oxidases—is an area of ongoing research across a range of diseases.
Modulation of peroxide production can occur through several mechanisms, including the inhibition or activation of enzymes producing hydrogen peroxide (e.g., xanthine oxidase inhibitors, NADPH oxidase inhibitors), scavenging of hydrogen peroxide or other ROS via antioxidant action, or induction of apoptosis by raising intracellular peroxide levels.
