Peroxisomal biogenesis factor 11 gamma (PEX11G)

Peroxisomal biogenesis factor 11 gamma (PEX11G) is a member of the PEX11 family of peroxisomal membrane proteins, known collectively as peroxins, which play central roles in the biogenesis, proliferation, and maintenance of peroxisomes[1][3][4]. PEX11G is one of three PEX11 paralogs found in mammals (PEX11α, PEX11β, PEX11γ), with PEX11γ’s specific biological functions being less clearly defined than the others, though evidence supports its involvement in peroxisomal growth, enlargement, and division, especially through potential heterodimerization with other PEX11 family members and interactions with fission machinery[1][4]. Like other PEX11 proteins, it is an integral peroxisomal membrane protein implicated in membrane remodeling and organelle fission, coordinating peroxisome proliferation in response to metabolic need[1][3][4]. While mutations in PEX11β (not PEX11γ) are associated with peroxisome biogenesis disorders in humans, PEX11γ is highly conserved, essential for peroxisome homeostasis, and loss-of-function models show disrupted peroxisome formation and proliferation in lower eukaryotes[1][4]. There are currently no known drugs or therapeutic interventions targeting PEX11G, and it is not yet established as a direct therapeutic target or disease biomarker[3][4].
