The peroxisomal biogenesis factor 2 pseudogene, annotated as ENSG00000258193, is a nonfunctional genomic sequence related to the human peroxisomal biogenesis factor 2 (PEX2) gene. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein[2][4]. Pseudogenes typically arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations such as premature stop codons or frameshifts, rendering them nonfunctional[2][4][3]. Some pseudogenes are transcribed into RNA, which can occasionally modulate genomic regulation by acting as microRNA "sponges" or through other non-coding RNA-mediated mechanisms, but this function is not established for this pseudogene[1][10]. As such, it is not considered a therapeutic target or disease-associated factor and should not be confused with the functional PEX2 gene, which plays a critical role in peroxisome assembly and related disorders.
