Target intelligence / Profile preview

Peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor gamma (PPARγ)

Target
PPARγ
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Nuclear receptor
01

Overview

Peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is a ligand-activated transcription factor belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily. It plays a central role in regulating gene expression related to metabolism, adipogenesis, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and fluid homeostasis. Activation or modulation of PPARγ has therapeutic implications for metabolic diseases including type II diabetes mellitus due to its role in improving insulin sensitivity. It may also be relevant for inflammatory conditions given its regulatory effects on immune cells like macrophages.

Other names
PPARGGlitazone reverse insulin resistance receptorNR1C3 (nuclear receptor subfamily 1, group C, member 3)
02

Mechanism of action

Activation of PPARγ leads to changes in gene expression related to metabolism, adipogenesis, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and fluid homeostasis. Synthetic agonists like thiazolidinediones improve insulin sensitivity.
