Overview

Pertussis antigens are molecular components derived from the bacterium *Bordetella pertussis*, the causative agent of whooping cough (pertussis). These antigens are used in vaccines and diagnostic assays to elicit or detect immune responses against the pathogen. Key antigens include Pertussis Toxin (PT), Filamentous Hemagglutinin (FHA), and Pertactin (PRN). Antibodies generated against these antigens can neutralize bacterial toxins, block adherence mechanisms, promote opsonophagocytosis, and facilitate clearance by the immune system. Modern acellular pertussis vaccines contain purified forms of these antigens to induce protective immunity while minimizing reactogenicity.
