Overview
Pertussis toxin (PT) is a protein exotoxin produced by *Bordetella pertussis*. It is an AB5 toxin that disrupts cell signaling by ADP-ribosylating Giα proteins, leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels. This disruption contributes to the pathogenesis of whooping cough and modulates the host immune response. It is used as a research tool and genetically inactivated forms are used in vaccines.
