Overview

PGM5 antisense RNA 1 (PGM5-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 9 (reverse strand)[1]. It belongs to the lncRNA class and acts as an antisense RNA relative to the protein-coding gene PGM5. Evidence indicates that PGM5-AS1 may function as a tumor suppressor, particularly in colorectal cancer, where its reduced expression is associated with increased tumor cell growth and proliferation in cellular and animal models. Conversely, higher PGM5-AS1 levels have sometimes been associated with poor prognosis, suggesting complex, context-dependent roles in cancer progression. It is being investigated as a potential prognostic biomarker for some cancer types, but there are no current therapeutic drugs targeting PGM5-AS1 or clinical safety concerns described in the literature[2][4][5][9].
