Acid–base homeostasis is the process by which the body maintains the pH of extracellular fluid within a narrow range (typically arterial pH 7.36–7.44) essential for cell metabolism and organ function. This homeostasis is achieved through three complementary systems: chemical buffers (primarily the bicarbonate buffer), respiratory regulation (altering carbon dioxide excretion), and renal regulation (reabsorption/generation of bicarbonate, acid excretion). Disturbances in acid–base homeostasis result in metabolic or respiratory acidosis or alkalosis, which can have life-threatening consequences. Note: "Acid–base homeostasis" is a physiological process, not a discrete molecular target (such as a protein or receptor), so the requested structure is not applicable.
