Phagocytic clearance cells, commonly known as phagocytes, are a diverse group of immune cells—including macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells—responsible for ingesting and destroying foreign particles, pathogens, and apoptotic debris. This process, known as phagocytosis or efferocytosis, is critical for maintaining tissue homeostasis and initiating the adaptive immune response. In the context of disease, these cells play a dual role; for instance, in cancer, they can either eliminate tumor cells or be subverted into tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) that promote tumor growth. While the cells themselves are not a single molecular target, specific receptors on their surface, such as SIRPα or Fc receptors, are frequently targeted by immunotherapies to enhance their clearance capacity.
