The process involves multiple steps: detection and binding of the target via cell-surface receptors, engulfment by plasma membrane extension to form a phagosome, subsequent fusion with lysosomes to form a phagolysosome where degradation occurs, and finally expulsion of residual material[1][2][4][5][6]. While central to the immune response and tissue maintenance, phagocytosis is a process rather than a druggable target itself, though certain molecules involved in phagocytosis (such as Fc gamma receptors and complement receptors) can serve as targets[2][4][6]. If more specificity is required, such as a particular phagocytic receptor or cell type (e.g., "Fc gamma receptor" or "macrophage mannose receptor"), those should be defined as targets instead.
