Overview

The pharyngeal and laryngeal mucosal surface is the epithelial lining of the upper aerodigestive tract, consisting primarily of stratified squamous and respiratory epithelium. It serves as a critical barrier against pathogens and environmental irritants while facilitating functions such as swallowing, vocalization, and immune defense through mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) (StatPearls, 2023). In clinical practice, this surface is a site for various pathologies, including viral and bacterial infections, chronic inflammation due to laryngopharyngeal reflux, and malignancies like squamous cell carcinoma (NIH, 2022). While not a single molecular target, it is the site of action for numerous topical and systemic therapies, including local anesthetics, anti-inflammatory agents, and targeted oncological treatments (PubMed, 2021). The integrity of this mucosal barrier is essential for maintaining airway protection and preventing the progression of localized diseases into systemic conditions. Therapeutic interventions often focus on restoring the barrier function or utilizing the surface for the absorption of localized medications.
