Phase II detoxification enzymes inducer refers to any compound or agent that increases the expression or function of Phase II detoxification enzymes. These enzymes are primarily conjugating transferases that play a crucial role in drug and endogenous toxin metabolism, making these substances more water-soluble for excretion. Inducers often work through activation of cellular signaling pathways, especially the KEAP1/NRF2/ARE system, to promote synthesis of enzymes such as glutathione S-transferases, UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, and sulfotransferases. While many nutritional phytochemicals serve as natural inducers, synthetic molecules are also described in research. Induction of these enzymes is associated with enhanced cellular defense against oxidative stress, reduced toxicant/carcinogen burden, and has been explored for cancer chemoprevention and neuroprotection.
