PHB1P13 (PHB1 pseudogene 13) is annotated as a pseudogene related to the prohibitin 1 (PHB1) gene family. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to known genes but are generally non-functional due to mutations that prevent coding for functional proteins. They usually arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and may be unexpressed or produce non-coding RNAs. Unlike PHB1, which encodes a protein involved in important mitochondrial, nuclear, and membrane signaling processes and is implicated in cancer, cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis, PHB1P13 has no evidence as a functional protein, receptor, or druggable target in the literature. Some pseudogenes within the PHB1 family (for example, PHBP1) have been described to regulate gene expression of their parental gene at the RNA level, but there is no evidence in curated genomic databases or the biomedical literature as of 2024 that PHB1P13 has any biological or clinical significance.
