Overview

PHB1 pseudogene 21 is presumed to be a processed pseudogene associated with the prohibitin 1 (PHB1) gene family. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble protein-coding genes but are generally nonfunctional due to the accumulation of disabling mutations, truncations, or the absence of regulatory elements[3][6]. Most such pseudogenes do not encode proteins and are not transcribed into functional RNA, though some pseudogenes may regulate the expression or function of related protein-coding genes via RNA-mediated mechanisms[6]. There is no evidence that PHB1 pseudogene 21 encodes a functional transcript, protein, or acts as a therapeutic target. The functional PHB1 gene encodes prohibitin 1, a highly conserved protein with roles in mitochondrial integrity, cell signaling, and tumor suppression[1][4][5]. Several PHB1-related pseudogenes exist (over 20 in humans), but these are generally not functional and only some have been studied for regulatory RNA functions[2][6]. Some pseudogenes (e.g., PHBP1) have been studied for regulatory effects on the parental PHB gene in cancer, but there is no direct data or established function for PHB1 pseudogene 21 itself[6]. PHB1 pseudogene 21 is not found in major curated therapeutic target databases. It is a poorly characterized and non-functional pseudogene of PHB1, with no recognized therapeutic, biomarker, or disease relevance. It is not a scientifically supported drug target, and the entry is likely incorrect or not actionable for pharmacological or biomedical purposes[2][6].
