Overview

Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is a simple aromatic organic compound (C6H5OH) and is not a therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme) in the human body. Instead, it is a chemical substance used as a pharmaceutical agent, antiseptic, and disinfectant [8]. In clinical practice, phenol is primarily utilized for neurolysis to treat severe muscle spasticity, where it acts by non-specifically denaturing proteins and causing localized nerve destruction [8]. It is also used in chemical matrixectomy for ingrown toenails and as a preservative in certain vaccines [8]. While many drugs contain phenolic functional groups that are essential for binding to specific biological targets, phenol itself lacks the specificity required to be a drug target [7, 9]. Its use is limited by significant safety concerns, including its corrosive nature and potential for systemic toxicity affecting the central nervous system and cardiovascular system [8]. Consequently, it is classified as a chemical agent rather than a biological target for drug development.
