Phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs) are a family of small, amphipathic, α-helical peptides produced by staphylococci. The PSMα subgroup consists of several closely related peptides (PSMα1–4). These toxins play critical roles in bacterial pathogenesis, including cell lysis, immune modulation, and biofilm dynamics. They function through direct membrane disruption, FPR2-mediated signaling, and surfactant action, making them important virulence factors, especially in CA-MRSA strains.
