Phenoxybenzamine is a synthetic non-selective, irreversible alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist (alpha blocker) that covalently binds to alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptors, leading to vasodilation and decreased blood pressure. It is primarily used in the management of hypertension and excessive sweating associated with pheochromocytoma, a catecholamine-secreting tumor, and less commonly for benign prostatic hypertrophy or certain bladder and pain syndromes. Its action is long-lasting due to irreversible receptor blockade. As a molecule, phenoxybenzamine is not a biological target but a drug that acts on biological targets.
