Overview

Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) is an enzyme (EC 4.3.1.24) that catalyzes the nonoxidative deamination of L-phenylalanine to produce trans-cinnamic acid and ammonia. This reaction represents the first committed step in the phenylpropanoid pathway, which is crucial for the biosynthesis of a wide range of secondary metabolites in plants. It is being investigated as an enzyme replacement therapy for phenylketonuria (PKU) to help degrade excess phenylalanine and has been explored experimentally in cancer therapy.
