Phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT) is an enzyme primarily found in the adrenal medulla, where it catalyzes the conversion of norepinephrine (noradrenaline) to epinephrine (adrenaline), representing the final step in catecholamine biosynthesis. PNMT is also expressed in select neurons within the human brain and certain populations of cardiomyocytes. It is essential for the stress response and involved in the regulation of various autonomic functions. Alterations in PNMT expression have been implicated in hypertension.
