Phloroglucinol O-methyltransferase (POMT) is an enzyme (EC 2.1.1.163) primarily characterized in plants like Rosa chinensis and certain bacteria (UniProt: Q2XW60). It catalyzes the sequential O-methylation of phloroglucinol using S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) as a methyl donor to produce 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene, a major scent component in roses (Wu et al., 2008, PubMed: 18460593). The enzyme is a member of the O-methyltransferase family and is involved in the biosynthesis of specialized secondary metabolites (NCBI Gene: 112181151). While phloroglucinol is used as a drug for gastrointestinal disorders, POMT is not a recognized therapeutic target in humans and does not have a direct role in human disease (PubChem: CID 4032). Its primary significance lies in plant biology and metabolic engineering for the fragrance and flavor industries. There are no known drugs that interact with this enzyme for therapeutic purposes in a clinical setting.
