Phosphate absorption is the physiological process by which inorganic phosphate (Pi) from dietary sources is taken up from the intestinal lumen into the bloodstream. This process is essential for maintaining phosphate homeostasis, which is critical for bone health, energy metabolism, and cellular signaling. It involves both paracellular (passive) and transcellular (active) transport mechanisms, regulated by vitamin D, PTH, and FGF23. Dysregulation can lead to disorders such as rickets/osteomalacia or vascular calcification.
