Phosphate ion homeostasis refers to any process involved in maintaining a steady internal state of phosphate ions within an organism or cell. This includes the regulation of both extracellular and intracellular phosphate concentrations to ensure proper physiological function. It is achieved through coordinated actions across several organs (intestine, kidneys, bone) and regulated by hormones like PTH, calcitriol, and FGF23, as well as sodium-phosphate cotransporters and cellular pathways like the PHO pathway.
